The first mountain bike shifter, the Suntour Mighty, was originally intended as a rear shifter for beach bikes.  It was only made for the "right" side and it was said that you could take the number of Might shifters sold, divide by two, and come up with the number of mountain bikes sold.  Since then, we have gone through index thumb shifters, push-push shifters, twist shifters and gone all the way up to 27 speeds.  Below are a few of the evolutionary steps of shifter development.
