1982 Salsa This bike was the personal ride of Ross Shafer, founder of Salsa. His first batch consisted of 6 bikes that were finished together. Mark Michel, designer of the Salsa logo and Bicycle Trip shop owner, built his bike up first so Ross considers it Salsa #1. This bike was finished second which makes it Salsa #2. All the bikes used the single piece fork crown that was lathe turned from solid billet steel. Four of the six bikes have the top tube/seat tube treatment shown as seen on this bike. One, for Terry Holben (maker of the early Salsa decals), had the fish mouth rotated 90 degrees from example since the top tube had been cut slightly short. The smallest frame had a conventional top tube seat tube intersection. The brake bosses are made from short sections of tubing with the Mafac piece brazed to the top. We have tried to replicate the original parts when possible but the bike was used as a test bed for various components and ideas. At one time, it even sported the Suntour BEAST electronic shifting system.
The "Scoboni" name on
the frame and serial number comes from Ross's early bike club
days. Everyone thought it would be cool to have Italian names and
it Ross became Roscoe became Scoboni.
